Guess what? It looks like those little gadgets that count the number of steps you have taken really do make you more active. Studies at Stanford University School of Medicine have concluded that wearing a pedometer increases daily activity by around 2,000 steps or about a mile of walking a day. That's a lot. Stanford researcher Dena Bravata says, "[A daily increase of] just over 2,100 steps might not sound that much, but it equates to a 27% increase in physical activity - which is really astounding." If you are on a weight loss programme and you want to increase your daily activity levels - and why wouldn't you? - having a daily step goal is a very powerful supplement to your gym programme. Think of it this way: As a very rough calculation, a daily increase of say 2,000 steps is likely to burn an extra 30,000 calories a year for the average person - which could be as much as 5kgs of weight loss.
