H.G. Wells wrote War of the Worlds, he also liked to ride a bike: “I came out for exercise, gentle exercise, and to notice the scenery ... And no sooner do I get on that accursed machine than off I go hammer and tongs; I never look to right or left, never notice a flower, never see a view…”
If you’re thinking of dusting off the road bike and take it for a spin, here are a few things you might like to consider: Get your bike serviced and set up properly – nothing worse than having to fight the bike; get a helmet, cycle shorts and a decent pair of sunnies. If you’re serious about cycling, get some cycling shoes or spuds as they are known – they’ll make you much more efficient because they’ll let you pull up as well as push down.
Running low on energy on a bike is called bonking (don’t ask). Avoid it by refuelling little and often - energy bars, water and sports drinks are all good. In the gym work on leg strength (leg press, squats and lunges), arm strength (biceps and triceps) and the back (seated rows, lat pulldowns and back extensions). It’s also worth spending time on a stationary cycle in the gym.
Talk to our coaches for advice. Take a look at our video for some bloke called Armstrong who fancies himself on two wheels for some unknown reason.
