Pressed For Time
January 05th, 2010
According to Wikipedia, Extreme Ironing (EI) is a performance art
in which people take an ironing board to a remote location and iron items of clothing . The official EI website says "the latest danger sport combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt." Click here if you'd like to see some of the very best in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olU947pcHeE . We're not sure how many of our members are extreme ironers but we feel that it is important for us to advise on what kind of training might be applicable for them. Reaching EI venues often requires leg strength - particularly the quads, so that should be included in your programme. Core strength is handy for maintaining the correct position of address at the board and upper arm work (biceps and triceps) is critical for the ironing movement. A sound level of cardiovascular fitness will stand the ironer in good stead and good range of movement (flexibility) is also important. If you are thinking of taking up EI or even doing something daft like taking a skiing holiday ask our coaches to help you with a sport-specific programme.
