Same Old, Same Old?

The legendary Frank Zappa once said, "Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." I know it's tempting to come to the club, activate autopilot and do the same weights routine every time - Lord knows we've all got enough decisions to make every day without deciding how many reps to do on the chest press - but if you're going to get the results you deserve in the weights room, you need to think about what you are doing. Two things in particular: Are you increasing either the weight or the number of repetitions you do on a fairly regular basis? And are you mixing up the exercises you are using? If the answer to both those questions is in the negative then you are probably not getting as much as you could be from your workout. All of this comes under the banner of progressive overload; to you and me it means getting out of our comfort zones.
