Born to Yawn.

Have you ever wondered why watching someone yawn, or the mere thought of yawning or even the word yawn makes you, well … want to yawn? The most common explanation is that it is all part of the subconscious herd behaviour that helps to unite we humans. The problem is, when a bout of yawning gets the better of us it can cause a whole heap of trouble; take a look at the video to the right.

Of course yawning is often a symptom of fatigue, which is fine just before you go to bed but isn’t all that handy in the middle of a busy day. Sound sleep is one of the key elements of good health and there’s not much doubt that people who exercise regularly sleep better than those who don’t. This is partly due to the fact that exercise helps our bodies to transition between the phases of sleep easily and partly due to the fact that when exercise places physical stress on the body, the brain increases the amount of time we spend in deep sleep, which is the phase of sleep during which our bodies repair themselves. Sleep well.
