“If I had been around when Rubens was painting, I would have been revered as a fabulous model. Kate Moss? Well, she would have been the paintbrush,” says Dawn French.
The desire to lose a few pounds is normal. Becoming so obsessed by losing weight that it makes you unhappy isn’t. So, what if you changed your goal from negative (losing weight) to positive (becoming healthier). What if your new objectives were: having more energy so that you can get more out of your day. Sleeping better, being more alert, being less stressed, being fitter, stronger and more flexible, being happier and healthier or being a good role model for your kids? If you adopted these goals you wouldn’t worry if you missed the odd session – there’s always tomorrow - or hoovered up the occasional piece of cheese cake.
Nobody is saying that dropping a few pounds isn’t a very worthwhile goal, but if you approach your exercise programme, and life in general, in a more relaxed, less driven state of mind there is every chance that you will shed some weight and enjoy doing it. I think Charlie’s Angel Drew Barrymore put it rather nicely: “I’d rather be a few pounds heavier and enjoy life.”
