Meal replacement and weight loss.

April 28, 2010

When I was a kid, the menu in our house consisted of two choices: take it or leave it. In those days leaving it meant going hungry, but we hadn’t heard of meal replacements back then.

According to the highly respected nutritionist Susie Burrell, there is no doubt that meal replacements (pre-packaged powdered drink mixes that you mix with water, milk or juice) work in terms of aiding weight loss. But there are issues around the long-term effects that such low calorie and low carbohydrate programmes can have on metabolism if they are used to replace all meals.

Our view is that meal replacement powders can be extremely beneficial – particularly to those who have hit a weight loss plateau – when they are used to complement a healthy diet. And our advice would therefore be to replace one meal a day for a couple of weeks – breakfast seems to work for many people – and see if this helps to get your weight loss programme going.
